Aliens and Androids at Discovery Place

“Are we alone?” Scientists are close to discovering new alien worlds and alien life on exoplanets – planets that exist outside the solar system.

The new exhibition at #DiscoveryPlace in Charlotte NC explores the possibility of life existing beyond earth. Fascinating to say the least. Some of us believe without a doubt that there is and some of us could never accept the idea.

However you may view this subject, much-debated down through the centuries, this exhibit leaves me impressed by how much science really knows about our universe. 

C3PO from Star Wars 

  Discover the difference between robots and androids, and get an up-close look at famous sci-fi robots from movies, such as Iron Man, the T-800 from Terminator, C-3PO from Star Wars and more. 

Iron Man 

The exhibit brings to mind the old time Buck Rogers comic books that depicted space travel with space ships and suits complete with space talk and walk. Phillip Francis Nowlan, the Buck Rogers creator, somehow knew about alien life way back when. After Steven Spielberg’s “Encounters of the Third Kind” I began to really wonder.

Van Gogh Alive at Discovery Place

If you missed this exhibit at Discovery Place in Charlotte NC last month you will want to make it a point to see it wherever and whenever you can in the future.

To see the life and paintings of this extraordinary artist up close and personal in the way it was presented at Discovery Place was visually captivating and stirred emotions not usually touched on.

Vincent Van Gogh was a complex human being troubled by his demons and exhilarated by his God-given talent to express himself on canvas to share with the world. God’s Grace touches us all but some are blessed above and beyond human understanding, this is Vincent Van Gogh.

We joined the exhibit on the last day with several hundred others in the course of a few hours to experience what modern day technology can display to the viewing eyes of all who were there. For us it was like standing in the midst of the landscapes he painted, being on the pages of his notes and sketches, almost reaching out and touching his shoulder when his self portraits call to you for compassion. Most of the time the music (sublime) paired with the enormous size of the paintings was so emotional that when quiet came you could hear a pin drop.

Get ready to get totally grossed out at Discovery Place in Charlotte. It seems pretty much all children from the ages of 4 to 14 love the subject of barf, slime and other gross stuff. So between June and September 2, 2013 Discovery Place has it all. 

Different animal smells

Animal Grossology engages kids in real life science topics presented in a fun exhibition that oozes with icky science.

Getting rid of hairballs

At first we thought “what is this?” But as we toured the exhibit we realized how much we did not know about animals poop and vomit and how the insides of all of us work. Actually by the end of the tour we were pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. A must see for everyone.

And the toothless owl

Logan Stewart, our lovely hostess and Manager of Marketing and Public Relations at Discovery Place, shared her experience of jogging in Dilworth early one morning and having an owl swoop down and try to grab her pony tail thinking it was breakfast. This happened on two occasions. It seems the owl has no teeth and swallows its food whole, small rodents etc., then what it doesn’t digest spits out in large pellets. The Grossology exhibit has several on display so you can see feathers bone and claws. Logan said it was quite frightening and she was sure the owl thought her pony tail was something good to eat.
